San Rafael Chamber of Commerce Presents: Women's Empowerment Series - An Evening with Dana King
The San Rafael Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Women of Industry Committee will be hosting the 2nd "Women's Empowerment Series" event, featuring Dana King, KPIX News Anchor, turned Artist/Activist.
King started her art career while working as an anchor at KPIX (CBS 5). She says she always knew she'd retire from broadcast journalism after she turned 50, because she didn't want to have to "cut and paste" herself to keep up with "society's standards for beauty." When that time neared, she had an Emmy and two Edward R. Murrow awards under her belt.
A lover of art, King began pursuing an MFA from San Francisco's Academy of Art University, where she discovered her love of sculpture. The medium worked well for her, she says; she found it to be another way to tell stories and inform the public. Dana is a classical figurative sculptor who creates public monuments of Black Bodies in Bronze. She studies the strength and resilience of African Americans and creates pieces in clay by hand that are then cast in bronze. Dana prefers sculptures because they take up space and space is power. Sculpture allows us to shape our story and determine how we are remembered.
"I'm still a journalist, but now my medium is clay," King said.Images
