San Rafael, CA – The Marin Builders Association is proud to announce the conclusion of the 2020 North Bay Construction Corps – Class of Marin (NBCC). This is the second year of the program in Marin.

Sponsored by the Mario Ghilotti Family Foundation, the NBCC program initially started with 27 Marin County high school seniors as part of a free 15-week intensive construction trades education program. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down all schools and in-person education programs in mid- March, the program was put on hold until it picked back up last week at the former Pini Hardware building in Novato.

A group of 6 students came back to the program and completed a two-week “boot camp” where they learned construction skills while building outdoor sheds. The students followed all the Marin County safety protocol for small construction sites.

During the program, students became proficient with:

    • Jobsite Safety and PPE Use
    • Measurements and Geometry
    • Power/Hand Tool Use/Safety
    • Communication Skills and Teamwork
    • Wood Structure Framing
    • Situational Critical Thinking/Problem Solving
    • Roofing
    • Waterproofing
    • Basic Plan Reading
    • Door/Window Installation
    • Siding Installation
    • Painting
    • Career Readiness

The students have plans to look for work in construction full and part-time and some plan to attend college. The program graduated 23 students in 2019, the program’s first year. Several graduates are continuing to build their careers in construction.

This program was founded with the help of the Mario Ghilotti Family Foundation and led by the Marin Builders Association in partnership with the Marin County Office of Education and the Career Technical Education Foundation of Sonoma County. Success of the program was due to the countless volunteer hours of local trades professionals and companies and the guidance of the North Coast Builders Exchange.
