Almost 80% of contractors across America report “difficulty in hiring qualified craft workers”, according to the Associated General Contractors. Among the key reasons cited is the perception among youth that jobs in the trades sector are “dirty” and not as “prestigious” as those requiring a college degree.
In response,
“Build California” is a new initiative aimed at debunking negative stereotypes and changing perceptions and attitudes about construction jobs. Using data, such as average yearly earnings across dozens of occupations in the construction sector, the initiative hopes to change hearts and minds, leading to greater labor participation in the sector.
