    Who We Are

    Our purpose is to assist low- and moderate-income people to secure and maintain quality, affordable housing.  The Marin Housing Authority (“MHA”) is a small, dynamic agency, well-respected in our field.  The Housing Choice Voucher and the Public Housing programs have been either a high performer or a standard performer in the past few years.  We serve thousands of people through a wide range of programs and services, including public housing for families, seniors and the disabled; housing choice vouchers (Section 8); supportive housing services for special needs populations; rental assistance payments; and financial and technical assistance for moderate-income first-time homebuyers and low-income homeowners.  We have about 40 employees.


    About MHA's Maintenance Department

    The Maintenance Team is responsible for agency-owned housing developments, located throughout the County of Marin (a total of approximately 500 units). 


    Position Description

    Marin Housing Authority is seeking an experienced professional responsible for the overall management of all maintenance activities and functions to ensure that our housing complexes and systems meet or exceed all regulatory, quality, health & safety requirements on a continuing basis.  The incumbent’s primary role will be to perform a wide variety of maintenance and repairs (approximately 85% of working hours will be dedicated to this).  Duties include organizing production; supervising, training and developing maintenance staff; resolving conflicts; coordinating with program managers; and developing and maintaining procedures and systems.  The position also requires field supervision of staff and contractors, a great deal of skill in dealing with clientele, a high level of conservation awareness, a strong sense of the mandates of efficiencies, strategic planning ability and a commitment to quality control.  Challenges awaiting the next Maintenance Manager include:
    • Managing the continued automation of the maintenance functions, including vacancy turnovers, the implementation of the YARDI maintenance and work order system, the preventative maintenance program, building systems inspections, and regulatory schedules.
    • Striving to make the agency a HUD High Performer Designee.
    • Managing maintenance functions within tight budget constraints.
    • Providing direct on-site supervision, training, coordination, and direction to maintenance employees.

    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be the equivalent of graduation from high school or possession of a GED certification and four years of experience in performing a wide range of building and/or landscape construction, maintenance and repair, that has included at least one year of providing direct supervision to subordinate staff.  Thorough knowledge of basic principles and practices of maintenance and construction, local/state/federal health and safety standards, and automated data systems is required, as is the ability to establish rapport and maintain effective working relationships with residents, landlords, staff, vendors, and other clientele.   The incumbent must be able to use a handheld smartphone for work orders.  A valid California driver’s license and acceptable driving record is prerequisite to employment. 

    The ideal candidate will also:

    Physical Demands

    Positions requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties.  The class also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment.  The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required.  Additionally, incumbents in this indoor/outdoor class work in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold.  Incumbents may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.
